FEVER

What if My Child has a Fever?

A fever is a strong indication of an ill child and is usually a good reason to consider seeing a Pediatrician. KixCare Pediatricians can help.

About Fevers

What is a fever?
A fever is a natural defense mechanism our bodies produce to fight off illness. When our temperatures rise above 38˚C (100˚F) it causes an increase in white blood cells that helps remove bacteria and viruses from our system faster than they can reproduce.
When should I seek help for a fever?
A fever lower than 38.9˚C (102˚F) does not require medical attention. Children with low-grade fevers won’t need medication unless they feel uncomfortable. Ways to ease the discomfort of a low-grade fever include:
Common related symptoms include:
If your child’s fever tops 39˚C (102.2˚F), see a Pediatrician or if one isn’t available, consult or visit your closest hospital. They’ll help determine the fever’s cause and provide direction for treatment/medication. Your Pediatrician may choose to schedule a follow-up appointment after the initial consultation to monitor your child's condition.
Chronic Cough

What if My Child has a Chronic Cough?

When your kid’s cough is clearly more than run-of-the-mill, complete with the sore chest and sleepless nights, KixCare Pediatricians can help.

About Chronic Coughs

What is a Chronic Coughs?
Occasional coughing is our body’s normal response to irritants in the lungs, but a nagging cough generally indicates a medical issue beyond a cold.
When should I seek help for a chronic cough?
If your child’s cough is new, try home remedies like honey and lemon water or saltwater gargling. If you see no improvement within 3–4 weeks, see a Pediatrician. They’ll determine the cough’s cause and provide direction for treatment/medication. Your Pediatrician may choose to schedule a follow-up appointment after the initial consultation to monitor your child’s condition.
If your child is coughing up blood, go to the hospital immediately.
A nagging cough generally indicates a medical issue beyond a cold and will likely be accompanied by:
Gastrointestinal Issues

What if My Child has bad Stomach Pains, Vomiting and or Diarrhea?

Gastro issues can be terribly frightening for kids and awful for parents. KixCare Pediatricians can help.

About Gastro Issues

What are gastrointestinal issues?
Gastro issues are related to intake and output. The root of the issue is usually in the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine or anus.
When should I seek help for vomiting, diarrhea or other gastro issues?
If your child moves from moderate to serious discomfort, see a Pediatrician. They’ll determine the cause of the discomfort and provide direction for treatment/medication. Your Pediatrician may choose to schedule a follow-up appointment after the initial consultation to monitor your child’s condition.
If your child is experiencing sustained, serious discomfort, go to the hospital immediately.
Common symptoms include:
Dermatologic Issues

What if My Child has a Skin Condition?

Skin conditions can be very painful for children. And ignoring early signs can cause lasting damage. KixCare Pediatricians can help.

About Skin Conditions

What are skin conditions?
Also called dermatological conditions, they range widely in severity, permanence and cause. Not all skin abnormalities are symptoms of a skin condition.
When should I seek help for a skin condition?
If a symptom is persisting for an unusually long time or your child is in noticeable discomfort, see a Pediatrician. They’ll determine the cause of the discomfort and provide direction for treatment/medication. Your Pediatrician may recommend a Dermatologist visit or schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your child’s condition.
If the issue is a burn larger than 3 cm in diameter, go immediately to the hospital.
So look out for these symptoms:
Baby/Infant Feeding

What if My Child has Trouble with Feeding?

It’s easy to worry about missing developmental milestones. And while you know you child will get there, reassurance is always good. KixCare Pediatricians and Pediatric experts can help.

About Lactation Support

What is a feeding issue?
It’s normal for a child to not want to eat sometimes. It becomes concerning when the child refuses or is unable to eat for a long period of time.
When should I seek help for lactation or feeding?
If your child presents with any of the above symptoms, a Pediatrician can determine the cause of the issue and provide direction. Your Pediatrician may recommend a Lactation Consultant visit (which you can book through KixCare) or schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your child’s condition.
Resulting symptoms include:
Mental Health

What if My Child is Dealing with Mental Health Issues?

Because a normally developing child is consistently changing, some mental health issues can lie in plain sight. If you think your child is going through more than mental growing pains, KixCare Pediatricians and Pediatric experts can help.

About Mental Health Issues in Children

What is a mental health issue?
A mental health issue is when thoughts or emotions interfere with a child’s daily life. If left unaddressed, they can have a significant impact in teenage years and into young adulthood.
When should I seek help for my child’s mental health?
It’s never too early to assess your child’s mental health. If you notice any of the behaviours above, a Pediatrician can perform an assessment, provide treatment suggestions and schedule follow-up appointments for further evaluation and care.
If necessary, your pediatrician may refer your child to a mental health practitioner, which you can book through KixCare. Our psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors and social workers can diagnose, treat and set up regular follow-up appointments to support you and your child and monitor changes in behaviour and/or family dynamics.
Parents should look out for these behaviours:
Developmental Issues

What if My Child is having Developmental Issues?

It’s easy to worry about missing developmental milestones. And while you know you child will get there, reassurance is always good. KixCare Pediatricians and Pediatric experts can help.

About Development Issues

What are developmental issues?
Developmental issues refer to marked delays in forming abilities. Parents should watch for indicators in the more common categories of development where delays are seen.
When should I seek help for my child’s lack of development?
Many delays can be identified by a child’s second birthday. If you notice any of the behaviours above after age 2, a Pediatrician can perform an assessment, provide suggestions and schedule follow-up appointments for further evaluation and care.
If necessary, your Pediatrician may refer your child to a mental health expert, behavioural counsellor or speech therapist — all of which you can do through KixCare. Any of them can diagnose, treat and set up regular follow-up appointments to support you and your child and monitor changes in behaviour and/or family dynamics.

Minor Injuries

What if My Child gets Injured?

Minor injuries are an unavoidable part of a healthy childhood. But children are resilient and can bounce back far quicker than adults. While most injuries can be dealt with at home, reassurance and instruction can be calming for everybody. KixCare Pediatricians and Pediatric experts can help.

About Minor Injuries in Children

What are minor injuries?
Minor injuries generally refer to most circumstantial accidents and soft-tissue injuries.
When should I seek help for a minor injury?
Most minor injuries can be dealt with at home with rest, ice, heat or elevation. If these remedies are ineffective after a week, a Pediatrician can perform an assessment, provide suggestions and schedule follow-up appointments for further evaluation and care. Your Pediatrician may recommend a Physiotherapist visit (which you can book through KixCare) or schedule a follow-up appointment to monitor your child’s recovery.
Note - if your child is severely injured or is showing symptoms of being poisoned, go immediately to the hospital.
Common minor injuries include:
Symptoms of minor injuries are easy to spot and include:
Academic Performance

What if My Child is Struggling with Academics?

Poor performance in class has implications beyond academics. The social/emotional effect can sometimes be more serious than the educational delay. KixCare Pediatricians and pediatric allied health providers can help.

About Poor Academic Performance

What is poor academic performance?
Poor academic performance is an indicator that your child is struggling with schoolwork. These struggles can be a general trend across their classes, or specific to a single subject.
When should I seek help for my child’s mental health?
Before doing anything, you should talk to your child’s teacher. If they recommend intervention, you can book a session with an academic counsellor through KixCare.
